Paper 1

This paper will consist of 40 questions, thirty of the direct choice type and ten of the multiple completion type, all with three options. Candidates will answer on the answer sheets provided. Please refer syllabus guide on topics for questions.

fis-chem02Paper 2

This paper will consist of two sections; Section A and B. All four questions in section A are compulsory. Candidates are required to choose two out of three questions in Section B. Six questions in total to be answered. Candidates will answer on the question paper. Please refer syllabus guide on topics for questions.

Paper 3

This paper will of two sections; section A and B. One question in Section A is compulsory. Candidates are required to choose two out of three questions in Section B. Three questions in total to be answered. Candidates will answer on the question paper. Please refer syllabus guide on topics for questions.

Paper 4

This paper is based on one assignment to be presented by each student. Presentation and submission would be done at the end of the semester. Multimedia tools usage are encouraged. Length of assignment is of twenty pages, double spaced, sized 11 fonts (Arial or Times New Roman). Pages inclusive of diagrams are not to be taken into count as assignment length. Excessive usage of graphics or graphic designs would not be considered into the marking scheme.

Topics are based on Applications of Chemistry. Key concepts:-
  • Chemistry is fundamental to understanding biological systems and processes and to modern medicine.
  • Novel chemistry can provide both the means of monitoring, and solutions to, environmental problems.
  • The chemist is a designer, both of methods of analysis and of novel molecules and materials.
  • The applications of chemistry have both positive and negative impacts on society and can be used to address the issues of pollution, disease and resources.
Paper 5 : Practical Examinations

This paper will consist of two experiments drawn from different areas of chemistry.  This paper will be arranged in two approximately one-hour sections to enable switch arrangement. One question will be an observational problem in which candidate will be asked to investigate by specified experiments, an unknown substance or substances. Candidates will be expected to draw up tables to record their observations, to analyze their results and to draw appropriate conclusions. The substances may be elements, compounds or mixtures. The other question or questions will be quantitative, either volumetric analysis or measurement of some quantity e.g. the enthalpy change of a reaction. Candidates will be expected to draw up tables, graphs and other appropriate means of presenting the data, to analyze it and perform calculations and to draw appropriate conclusions. Candidates will answer on the question paper.fis-chem03

Topics for practical assessments are based on ALL three theory segments; Physical, Organic and Inorganic Chemistry involving quantitative and qualitative analytical techniques.

Written Practical Examinations(Alternative to Practicals)

This paper will consist of two questions. Students should apply scientific process and manipulative skills like observing, measuring, making inference, predicting as well as skill in interpreting data, graphs and diagrams. The candidates also need data analysis, graph plotting skills, able to calculate and derive conclusions.

Ability to interpret diagrams, photographs, identifying the variables involved and their relationships to form inference and hypothesis is required. In addition, skills to suggest suitable scientific investigation with proper procedures to test the hypothesis is also required besides drawing diagrams, graphs whenever necessary to points clearer. Candidates will answer on the question paper.
